Creative Futures

Creative Futures is a project led by Creative Youth Network in partnership with Rising Arts Agency and PAPER arts. Supported by Arts Council England, Creative Futures looks to identify a way of helping young emerging artists working in all artforms aged 16 to 25, especially those who are experiencing barriers to accessing careers in the arts sector.

It provides young people with aspiration and enthusiasm to progress their creative practice and professionalism to the next level.

Creative Futures supports young artists in creating new work, developing portfolios and networks, exploring ideas and inspiration, and setting up their own professional practice and business, whilst providing part-time paid employment as freelancers at Creative Youth Network.

Creative Futures provides five artists with the following over six months:

  • Studio space

  • Professional mentoring

  • Work placements / professional experience

  • Money to make new work

  • Showcase opportunities of new work

  • Help in setting yourself up as a freelance practitioner

  • Paid opportunity as a freelancer

  • Professional business support

Final exhibition

Through Creative Futures, I've made two short films exploring the topic of dyslexia. One video focuses on my own experiences with dyslexia and my childhood, and the other focuses on storytelling with dyslexics. Brought together is a visually stunning exhibition of film, music and photography, What’s it Like shares with you the experiences of living and growing up with dyslexia.

Dyslexia was always something I used to hide from. For as long as I can remember I have always felt ashamed and embarrassed about my dyslexia and towards learning (if it wasn't art based.) However, since finishing school, I've had a whole new attitude towards my dyslexia. I now see my "learning difference" as a positive and a part of my creative identity.

I wanted to create something that reflects dyslexia as a positive and highlights the low self-esteem that commonly comes along with having dyslexia, particularly in mainstream education.
